When you look at the wondrous village in the trees, it's hard hard to imagine its conception. 30 wet and drained hippies huddled around a fire in the pouring rain, with little more than a layer of plastic between them and pneumonia. The plastic made rivers and lakes. The main building had collapsed less than an hour previous. Most were asleep when it came crashing down. It was 4AM. Now they were drunk on poitÃn. It made the night that much more bearable, as they waited for the rain to subside, or for morning - whichever came first.
When you are faced with that every night, it's amazing how resourceful and hard working a supposedly lazy bunch of dole heads can be. This forest - the largest in Ireland - was under threat, and for 6 six years, the community lived high in the trees, and underground in tunnels, both natural and man made. This was the last stand for a unique ecosystem. A result of glacial erosion in the ice age.
